Enrollment rose gradually from about 19.9 million in 2010 to a peak of about 20.5 million in 2018–2019, then fell by roughly 1.6 million by fall 2022 (about 18.6 million) and has held near 18.6 million through fall 2024. Methodology

Enrollment is measured once per fall semester and includes all degree- and certificate-granting institutions (public and private) reporting to IPEDS. The post-2020 drop reflects both pandemic-era withdrawals and longer-term demographic pressure. Rounding is applied to the thousands for readability.
